CHAPTER 9

OUTLINE YOUR IDEAL LIFE

Welcome to one of Fab’s incredibly challenging practical exercises that are super fun – and at times super hard – to carry out. Why hard? Because I am asking you to let go of any expectations, responsibilities, pre-conceptions and bias and let your imagination loose. If you know me, or have spent enough time around me, you know that letting my imagination loose is not a problem. Give me a journal, a pen and a few hours of uninterrupted quiet and I can come up with the wildest schemes and ideas. Why? Because I turned the idea of bringing a bunch of bloggers together into a profitable business. (Disclaimer: there is no such a thing as overnight success; it took me six years to create a profitable business.)

Still, I even managed to get paid for my writing (say what!), publish one book, and you’re holding the second one in your hands. What I have learned from the journey so far, including the complex set of sub-jobs I have taken since, is that getting clearer on the lifestyle you want to lead is essential – and your work is part of your life. These are not separate worlds that never meet.

As the world as a collective has faced the challenges of working from home, it has become crystal clear that our lifestyles and routines need as much TLC as our faces. Jason Womack, author of Your Best Just Got Better: Work Smarter, Think Bigger, Make More, also recommends writing an ideal day scenario for yourself to make the most of each day. Knowing what “ideal” means to you gives you a goal to work toward, he says. (See the Action Step below for how we can put this into action.)

I was talking to a friend recently, who was struggling with deciding what to do with her career. Where to be in the next five years. Which country to live in. Honestly I found it hard to imagine being in her shoes, as I have always had a “plan”, but I was excited to help her find her own answers.

As I was going through this exercise with her, she shared how she had once shared a cab with loads of businessmen on their way back to London from Italy. All of them led a double life, where they spent Monday to Friday in London and flew back every weekend to see their family in Italy. Now, for most people this is an unattainable lifestyle – not to mention being environmentally unsustainable.

However, these people valued their work (and the location of their work being in London) above pretty much everything else. Ranking your most important values and non-negotiables can truly help even the most indecisive person draft out a lifestyle that works for them. I believe that finding a lifestyle that fits you is key to your workflow and making your overall work habits stick. At times, it may also bring you to realize that your job or path is not the right one for your long-term vision.
